NCT: More Than Noise Music

Noise music has been a trending form of song in K-pop for quite a few years now. The term is used to describe a song that sounds all over the place. The melodies clash, it’s jarring to listen to, and it sounds like the producers didn’t spend a lot or time on the song as a whole.

Popular boy group NCT has put out song after song with noise music qualities, but they're not only noise music. And if you’re not familiar with the group, you may have the wrong impression that noise is all they do.

The NCT fandom is called “NCity.” When people qualify as NCTzens, aka people inside the fandom, it’s usually because they listen to most of the group’s albums, including b-sides as well as title tracks. These people are aware that NCT explores genres beyond “noise” because they’ve heard the b-sides.

B-sides are the key to unlocking NCT’s diverse range of music. For instance, some songs have EDm elements such as Firetruck, Drippin, Kick it, Chain, and Wakey Wakey. Other songs are disjoint but well produced, such as Punch.

NCT overall incorporates interesting and highly experimental elements. Simon Says and 7th Sense are examples of this, and you simply have to listen to them to understand. One subunit of NCT, called WayV,  has influences of electronic music. Turn Back Time and Moonwalk are the prime examples of that, but Take off followed more Pop and Hip Hop.

NCT 127, a different unit of NCT, has Superhuman, which gives off a 90s synth vibe and futuristic sound. Yet another unit called NCT Dream has the song Chewing gum, which is influenced by electronic music. We Go up by Dream has a more bubblegum pop music sound, though.

The list of various sounds that NCT, as a whole group, takes on is almost too long to list. With five units (127, U, Dream, WayV, and NCT Doejaejung), they put out copious amounts of music. Not to mention, the group has been active every year since 2016. That makes for an extremely diverse discography. There’s a song to suit most anyone’s music preferences.

Now, you should have plenty of evidence to prove that NCT doesn't just make “noise.” Share this with anyone who needs reminding!

Finally, as a bonus, here are some additional songs:

Regular was a trap and hip hop influenced track. Sit Down, Mad city, My Van, and Whiplash are rap based hip hop tracks. Highway to Heaven is a vocal based pop song. No Longer and Make Your Day are both ballads. They are R&b and vocal based.
